History

Higashine Station is an Ōu Main Line stop in the city of Higashine, Yamagata Prefecture, operated by JR East within the line section nicknamed the "Yamagata Line." The station opened on 5 December 1911 and was sited away from the town centre to serve the adjacent Higashine Onsen district. Freight handling ended in 1975 and parcels in 1985. The station was absorbed into JR East at the privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987. With the December 1999 extension of the Yamagata Shinkansen, much of the platform footprint was rebuilt and the new Sakuranbo-Higashine Station opened nearer the city centre, leaving this station with through-running Shinkansen but no longer the city's principal stop.
