History

Sawada Station opened on 7 October 1939 with the Ishinomaki Line's extension from Ishinomaki to Onagawa. At opening it was a staffed station with passing tracks and freight handling; it lost both functions in 1962 and was unstaffed thereafter. The station passed to JR East at the 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways. Service was suspended by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, and ground subsidence at the site left the tracks submerged at high tide. Trains returned in stages — to Watanoha–Urashuku on 16 March 2013, and through to Onagawa on 6 August 2016. The station is a single-platform halt with no station building.
