History
Watanoha Station opened on 7 October 1939 as part of the Ministry of Railways' Ishinomaki Line. Freight handling ended in January 1984 and parcel handling in March 1985. The station passed to JR East at privatisation on 1 April 1987 and to a contracted operator in 2005. The 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami suspended the line on 11 March 2011; service from Ishinomaki resumed on 17 March 2012, and the stretch east to Urashuku followed on 16 March 2013. Senseki-Tōhoku Line through running began on 6 August 2016. The station was fully de-staffed in March 2020, and a new station building opened on 24 March 2023.
