History
Imagawa Station was newly established as Imagawa Signal Station on 1 July 1944. As an exception it then became a temporary stopping point and, later, a temporary station; throughout this period no operating distance was assigned to the site and fares were calculated as if to the next station along the line. With the JNR privatisation on 1 April 1987 the temporary station was promoted to a full passenger station, opening as Imagawa Station of JR East.

Notes
The Imagawa district is an old settlement; a stone monument in front of the station marks it as the "birthplace of minshuku lodgings in Sambokucho". The first three minshuku began summer operations in July 1964, and by the peak around 1985 nearly twenty minshuku stood in the village. As of 2013 only one remained in business.
