History

Atago Station opened on 1 July 1962 on the coastal alignment of the Tōhoku Main Line, 377.2 km from Tokyo. It was built as compensation for nearby residents when the original "Matsushima" station on the abandoned mountain alignment was closed the same day; the new coastal station that took over the Matsushima name was inconveniently far from those communities, so Japanese National Railways funded Atago as a replacement. The platform sits atop the embankment of the new line; the tunnel directly beneath is a relic of the original alignment. JR East took over at privatisation on 1 April 1987, and Suica became usable here on 26 October 2003. The two opposed side platforms remain unnumbered.

Notes

The tunnel directly under the platform belongs to the abandoned mountain alignment of the Tōhoku Main Line, which the station was built to compensate residents for losing.
