History

The station opened on 10 April 1928 as Tomiyama Station on the Miyagi Electric Railway. When the line was nationalised on 1 May 1944 it was renamed Rikuzen-Tomiyama to avoid duplication elsewhere on the national network. Service was suspended for a year from 10 June 1945, resuming on 10 June 1946, and the station was de-staffed on 1 October 1958. JR East took over at the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. Suica became usable here on 26 October 2003. The 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami forced closure on 11 March 2011, and service across the full Senseki Line was restored on 30 May 2015. Senseki-Tōhoku Line trains pass without stopping.
