History
Kokufu-Tagajō Station opened on 29 September 2001 on the Tōhoku Main Line as a station requested and partly funded by the City of Tagajō, with construction costs supplemented by resident donations. The name, chosen by public competition, refers to the nearby Taga Castle ruins, the ancient seat of the Mutsu provincial government and the Chinjufu pacification headquarters; the working title during construction was Tagajō-Seichō Station. Suica acceptance began on 26 October 2003. From 30 May 2015 the station became a stop for the local-tier ("green rapid") trains of the new Senseki-Tōhoku Line. The Midori no Madoguchi staffed ticket office closed on 30 November 2021.
