History

Rikuzen-Sannō Station opened on 15 August 1933 as Tagajō-mae Station, a stop on the freight-leaning Shiogama Line in what is today the city of Tagajō, Miyagi Prefecture. On 1 May 1944 it was renamed to its current form, and on 15 November 1944 a new Tōhoku Main Line section was opened between here and Shinai-numa, absorbing the Iwakiri to Rikuzen-Sannō stretch of the old Shiogama Line. The Sendai Rinkai Railway freight line opened from the station on 1 October 1971. JR East took over on 1 April 1987 with the privatisation of JNR, and Senseki-Tōhoku Line "green rapid" services began calling on 30 May 2015.

Notes

The June 2015 cover of JTB's national timetable magazine was shot at this station with actress Rena Matsui — reportedly the first time a female celebrity had appeared on the cover.
