History

Tagajō Station opened on 5 June 1925 as part of the Miyagi Electric Railway's initial Sendai-Nishi-Shiogama section. The line was nationalised on 1 May 1944, and the station handled freight until October 1971 and parcels until February 1984. It passed to JR East at the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. From fiscal 1999 the city of Tagajō and JR East began a roughly 12.8 billion yen continuous grade-separation project covering a 1.8-kilometre stretch through the station and eliminating four level crossings; the up-line was switched to elevated track on 29 November 2009, the down-line on 8 April 2012, and the rebuilt three-track elevated station and new building entered service on 17 November 2013.
