History
Kunimi Station opened as an unstaffed station on 1984-02-01, together with Kitayama Station on the Senzan Line. Sendai Station began dispatching staff on 1987-03-20, in effect making the station staffed, and on 1987-04-01 it passed to JR East at the privatisation of Japanese National Railways. A passing loop entered service later that year on 1987-06-01. Originally a single side platform with one track, the station saw rapid passenger growth in the mid-1990s as schools, vocational colleges and universities opened nearby, and morning crowding became dangerous. A second side platform was added across the tracks on 1997-03-22. In 2002 the station building was moved to the north side, with the old building remodelled as a lavatory. Automatic ticket gates were installed on 2003-03-13 and Suica IC service began on 2003-10-26. From 2005-03-28, rapid trains began stopping, making the station served by all trains.

Notes
Because the old station building south of the tracks was kept as a lavatory after the 2002 relocation, a level crossing inside the station precinct survives — used purely for reaching the toilets.
