History
Rikuzen-Haranomachi Station opened on 5 June 1925 as a stop on the Miyagi Electric Railway, when the line first reached west to Sendai. The location, then in Haranomachi village, was absorbed into the city of Sendai in 1928. The line was nationalised on 1 May 1944. From its early years the station hosted an adjacent depot, the Rikuzen-Haranomachi Electric Train Yard, which served as the operating hub for the Senseki Line until the yard relocated to Fukudamachi as the Miyagino Depot in March 1991. The station moved underground on 11 March 2000 when the city-centre stretch of the Senseki Line was tunnelled, and its current building dates from that work.
