History

Rokuchonome Station opened on 6 December 2015 with the rest of the Sendai Subway Tōzai Line and carries the station number T12. It sits in Wakabayashi Ward beneath the intersection of Prefectural Route 23 and the planned Shimizu-Kōji to Tagajō road, with a single island platform on the third basement level and two surface exits, North 1 and South 1. The unusual station name preserves a local etymology: a nearby Taishidō temple holds a stone carved with the six characters of "Namu Amida Butsu" — known as the rokuji no mei — and the place name was corrupted over time from rokuji to rokuchōnome. Construction had started in 2006, with the final name confirmed on 24 December 2013.
