History

Hirakida Station opened on 1 November 1914 with the inauguration of the Murakami Line's Nakajō - Murakami section, which was incorporated into the Uetsu Line in 1924 and the Uetsu Main Line a year later. Freight handling and parcel delivery ended in 1963, and the station became unstaffed in September 1972 when remaining parcel services were withdrawn. A new station building replaced the original in March 1984. With the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, the station came under JR East control, and a volunteer "honorary stationmaster" was appointed in May 2012.
