History
Nakajō Station opened on 1 June 1914 when Japanese government railways extended the Murakami Line from Shibata to Nakajō, and it became part of the Uetsu Main Line on 31 July 1924. Reflecting its role as the main station of Tainai City, a Midori no Madoguchi staffed window opened on 1 April 1979, and the station passed to both JR East and JR Freight at the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. The original station building was replaced in stages, culminating in a new bridge-style station and free public passageway opened on 21 July 2018. Suica became valid here on 1 April 2014.
