History

Ōgawara Station opened on 15 December 1887 as part of the Tōhoku Main Line under Nippon Railway, the same private operator that established Iwanuma to its north. Severe rains in early September 1890 damaged the track between Shiroishi and Ōgawara, halting trains for around six weeks until repairs were completed on 20 October. Freight handling ended on 15 January 1984, and the Midori no Madoguchi staffed ticket office opened in December 1986. The station passed to JR East at the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. Suica became valid here on 26 October 2003, and Ōgawara was transferred to outsourced operation on 1 October 2014.
