History

Tenoko Station opened on 10 August 1931 when the Yonesaka East Line was extended from Imaizumi, serving the town of Iide in southwestern Yamagata. With the extension to Uzen-Numazawa on 10 November 1933 it became an intermediate stop. Freight handling ended on 2 October 1972, full destaffing followed on 1 December 1975, and the station passed to JR East at the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. A new station building was completed on 21 December 2020. Services along this section of the Yonesaka Line have been suspended since the August 2022 flood damage to the line.

Notes

Tenoko's old opposite platform now serves as a maintenance siding, accessed by a turnout retained on the Yonezawa side.
