History

Hamayoshida Station opened on 10 November 1897 as Yoshida Station, a private Nippon Railway stop on what is now the Jōban Line in the town of Watari, Miyagi. The line was nationalised on 1 November 1906 and the station was renamed Hamayoshida on 1 June 1915. The station was transferred to JR East at the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987. After the 11 March 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, services north of Hamayoshida to Sōma were suspended until 10 December 2016, when the section reopened on a realigned inland route. The original 1897 wooden station building is still in use.
