History
Oitama Station opened on 20 December 1917 on the Ōu Main Line in what is now the city of Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture. Freight handling ended on 20 December 1960, luggage handling ended on 3 February 1975, and the station was destaffed under a simplified-agency arrangement at the same time. The original station building was replaced in 1982 with a small shelter converted from a shipping container. The station was absorbed into JR East at the privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987, and it lies on the Yamagata Line nickname section of the Ōu Main Line, with Yamagata Shinkansen trains passing through without stopping.
