History

Shibata Station opened on 2 September 1912 with the Shin'etsu Line extension from Niitsu, becoming a junction in 1914 when the Murakami Line continued north and again in 1925 when the Akatani Line branched off. The Akatani Line closed in April 1984. The current station building dates to 18 December 1972, when a travel centre was added; an underground free passage in 1985 first allowed direct passage to the east side. The privatisation of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 transferred operations to JR East and JR Freight, while regular freight ceased around March 2002. Limited expresses Inaho to Sakata and Akita stop here, as does the joyful train Kairi.

Notes

A planned overhead-deck rebuild was cancelled after the November 2010 Shibata mayoral election, when challenger Kaoru Nikaidō won partly by pledging to abandon the project; barrier-free upgrades were delivered instead through underpass elevators completed in February 2015.
