History

Echigo-Ishiyama opened on 1 October 1957 as Ishiyama Signal Station on the Shin'etsu Main Line, also marking the start of a freight branch to Niigata Marshalling Yard. It was upgraded to a full passenger station as Echigo-Ishiyama on 1 November 1960, and its precincts were electrified on 20 May 1962. An underpass linking the east and west sides of the line was completed on 8 April 1980. The station passed to JR East at JNR's privatisation on 1 April 1987. Automatic ticket gates entered service on 3 March 2005, and Suica became valid on 21 January 2006. A west-side plaza opened on 25 March 2015, and an east-west free passage with elevators is planned for spring 2027.

Notes

The platforms have no internal footbridge — passengers must use an outside-the-gates underpass to switch sides — and local community councils have been petitioning since 2012 for a barrier-free overhead rebuild.
