History

Echigo-Akatsuka Station opened on 25 December 1914 as part of the Echigo Railway. It was nationalised on 1 October 1927 as part of the JNR Echigo Line and passed to JR East at the 1987 privatisation. The station was de-staffed in 1982 with the introduction of centralised train control, and the present station building was completed in November 1982. A footbridge replaced the previous internal level crossing in 1985. Located in Akatsuka in Niigata’s Nishi Ward, the station has a single island platform serving two tracks operated as a one-line through, and is 64.9 km from the line’s starting point at Kashiwazaki. Suica was introduced in January 2006.

Notes

Although a designated unmanned station, in 1994 the surrounding farmland transformed when Niigata University of International and Information Studies opened nearby; the area was officially renamed Mizukino during housing redevelopment.
