History
Maoroshi Station opened on 25 October 1910 as the eastern terminus of the Railway Agency's Shin'etsu Line branch extending from Niitsu. Through running to Tsugawa began in June 1913, the line was renamed Iwakoshi in November 1914 on its completion, and was rechristened the Ban'etsu West Line in October 1917. Goods traffic ceased in September 1973 and parcel handling in February 1983, when the station became unstaffed; a rear (northern) entrance opened the following month. The station passed to JR East on 1 April 1987. From a March 2014 timetable change one daytime local round trip between Maoroshi and Gosen was withdrawn, while the down "Agano" rapid service began stopping at Maoroshi instead.

Notes
The Himalayan cedar that stands at the front of the station was planted in 1970 to mark the station's sixtieth anniversary, and a cafe still operates on the right of the forecourt.
