History
Kirihara Station opened on 5 December 1919 as a stop (teiryūjo) on the Echigo Railway between Kojimaya and Ōkōzu (now Teradomari), and was promoted to a station on 28 December 1920. The Echigo Railway was nationalised on 1 October 1927. Freight handling ended in 1962, the station was destaffed at the end of 1973, and the current building was completed on 31 March 1984. It passed to JR East at privatisation on 1 April 1987.
