History

Obiori Station opened on 16 June 1898 on what is now JR East's Shin'etsu Main Line in the city of Sanjō, Niigata Prefecture. The station has two ground-level opposed side platforms serving two tracks, linked by a footbridge, and is unstaffed. It came under JR East control with the 1 April 1987 privatization of Japanese National Railways, and a new station building was completed in 1992. The station now stands 88.5 kilometers from the line's other end at Naoetsu, served by both local services and the line's selected rapid trains.
