History

The station opened on 1899-07-15 as Wakamatsu Station on the Ganetsu Railway, later renamed Aizu-Wakamatsu on 1917-05-21 to distinguish it from Wakamatsu Station in Fukuoka Prefecture. It became the principal rail gateway for Aizu, with later extensions tying it into the Banetsu West Line, the Tadami Line and through-running services from the Aizu Railway. JR East and JR Freight took over at privatisation on 1987-04-01. In 2001 the station building was remodelled in a castle-style design echoing the nearby Tsurugajō. The station was selected as one of the "Top 100 Stations of the Tōhoku Region" in 2002.

Notes

The Banetsu West Line has a switchback configuration at the station, with both Kōriyama and Niitsu lines entering from the north side.
