History

Nishi-Wakamatsu Station opened on 15 October 1926 when Japanese National Railways inaugurated the Aizu Line section between Aizu-Wakamatsu and Aizu-Bange. In August 1971 the route assignment was changed to the Tadami Line. The station passed to JR East and JR Freight at the JNR privatisation of 1 April 1987, and on 16 July of that year the Aizu Line was transferred to the newly founded Aizu Railway. Freight service ended in 1998 and the JR Freight station was abolished in 1999. The present elevated station building was completed on 18 September 2005, replacing the original wooden structure, and JR staffing was discontinued on 20 November 2022 when signalling moved to remote operation from Aizu-Wakamatsu.

Notes

As the nearest station to Tsuruga Castle, the site has at times been proposed for renaming to "Aizu-Tsurugajō Station" by the mayor of Aizuwakamatsu.
