History
Kōriyama Station opened on 1887-07-16 with the inauguration of Nippon Railway service between Kōriyama and Kuroiso, and the line was extended north to Sendai and Shiogama on 1887-12-15. Services on what became the Banetsu West Line began on 1898-07-26. Nippon Railway was nationalised in 1906 and the station building was rebuilt several times — in 1900, 1913, 1951 and 1980. Tōhoku Shinkansen services began on 1982-06-23. JR East and JR Freight took over at JNR privatisation in 1987. The station is a major junction for the Tōhoku Main Line, Banetsu West Line, Banetsu East Line and Suigun Line.

Both departure melodies used at the station — "Tobira" on conventional platforms and "Kiseki" on Shinkansen platforms — were composed by the band Greeeen, who originated in Kōriyama.
