History

Higashi-Kashiwazaki Station opened on 11 November 1912 on the privately operated Echigo Railway under the name Hisumi Station (比角駅). The Echigo Railway was nationalised on 1 October 1927, becoming the JNR Echigo Line. The current wooden station building was completed in November 1953, and the connecting footbridge in November 1969. The station was renamed Higashi-Kashiwazaki on 1 October 1969. Freight handling ended on 1 December 1973, and the station became contracted on 31 May 1982 with the introduction of line-wide CTC. Parcel handling ended in February 1984. Operations passed to JR East on 1 April 1987 with the privatisation of Japanese National Railways. Of the two side platforms, only Platform 1 is now in service.
