History
Kitajō Station opened on 1 July 1897 on the Shin'etsu Main Line in the city of Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture. The line was subsequently absorbed into the Japanese National Railways system, and on 1 April 1987 the station came under the control of the East Japan Railway Company following the privatisation of the JNR. The station is located approximately 45 kilometres from the Shin'etsu Main Line terminus at Naoetsu, and now consists of two ground-level opposed side platforms connected by a footbridge and serving two tracks. It is unattended, and the surrounding area includes the ruins of Kitajō Castle along with the local post office and primary and middle schools.
