History

Yoneyama Station opened on 13 May 1897 as Hassaki Station under the Hokuetsu Railway on the Shin'etsu Main Line in Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture, coming under state ownership when that private railway was nationalised in 1907. The station was renamed to its present name on 20 March 1961. Freight services were withdrawn in 1977 and parcel services in 1984, and following the privatisation of the Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station was absorbed into the East Japan Railway Company. The current building, a joint development with the local agricultural cooperative, opened in October 1986; staffing was reduced to simple agency in 1999, the station became unstaffed in 2002, and barrier-free works were completed in October 2023.
