History

Ononiimachi Station opened on 21 March 1915 as the terminus of the Heigun West Line extension from Miharu, in present-day Ono, Tamura District, Fukushima Prefecture. On 10 October 1917 a further extension on the Heigun East Line linked the station to Ogawagō, joining the two sections to form what became the Ban'etsu East Line, with Ononiimachi as an intermediate station. Freight handling ceased in 1981 and parcel handling in 1984, and following the privatisation of the Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 the station passed to the East Japan Railway Company. It now functions as an operational hub for the line, with most Kōriyama-bound services terminating here, and the Midori no Madoguchi office closed on 31 August 2023.
