History

Kawahigashi Station opened on 30 October 1931 as the terminus of the Suigun North Line (Suigun-Hokusen). It became a through station on 4 December 1934 when the Suigun Line was completed by linking Iwaki-Tanagura and Kawahigashi. CTC introduction in 1983 left it unstaffed save for a volunteer-run simple-commission ticket office; the station passed to JR East on 1 April 1987. The disused second track was closed on 26 October 2014, the old station building was demolished in December 2019, and a new station building opened on 24 March 2020.

Notes

The station's rebuilt toilet, completed in 2018, was given a design evoking a traditional storehouse (kura), and the 2020 station building continues that storehouse-inspired look.
