History
Echigo-Iwasawa Station opened on 15 June 1927 on what was then called the Tōkamachi Line, when the section from Echigo-Kawaguchi to Echigo-Iwasawa was inaugurated; the route was renamed the Iiyama Line in 1944. Freight handling ended in 1976 and parcel handling in 1984, and the station was downgraded to a sub-station status in 1983 and finally made unstaffed in 1995 after block-section duties were withdrawn in 1992. With the privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987 it passed to JR East. The wooden station building retains its 1927 form behind a refurbished exterior, and a former island platform remains in situ but is unused.
