History
Iwaki Station opened on 1897-02-25 as Taira Station (平駅). The Banetsu East Line was extended to Kōriyama from this point on 1917-10-10, making the station a junction of the Jōban Line and the inland route. JR East took over at JNR privatisation on 1987-04-01. The station was renamed Iwaki on 1994-12-03, reflecting the surrounding city's name. A new station building was completed on 2007-10-25. Following the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster of March 2011, Iwaki served as the northern terminus for Jōban Line limited-express services until through-running to Sendai was restored in March 2020.
