History

Iwaki-Hanawa Station opened on 10 October 1931 in what is now Hanawa, Higashishirakawa District, Fukushima Prefecture, on the Suigun Line that runs from Mito through southern Fukushima. Freight handling ended on 1 November 1980 and the station was destaffed on 1 June 1983 with the CTC modernisation of the Suigun Line, becoming a simplified-commission station for ticket sales. The current station building, integrated with the town community plaza and library, was completed on 13 October 1993 and won the 1995 Good Design Award and a 1996 Brunel Award commendation in the small-station category. Ownership passed to East Japan Railway Company at the JNR privatisation of 1 April 1987.
