History
Kotaki Station opened on 24 December 1935 when the government-built Ōito Line's northern section was extended from Nechi, in what is now Itoigawa, Niigata Prefecture. The line through to Nakatsuchi opened on 15 August 1957, making Kotaki an intermediate stop. Freight handling ended in 1981 and parcel handling in 1984, and the station was destaffed on 1 April 1985. The 1935 wooden station building still stands. Service was disrupted by the July 1995 floods that broke the line for over two years and again by the November 2014 Kamishiro Fault earthquake; the passing-loop was removed in 2007, leaving a single side platform. The station passed to JR West at privatisation on 1 April 1987.

Notes
The 1935 wooden waiting room with built-in benches is still in use, and a disused water tower remains on the station grounds.
