History

Yunishigawa-Onsen Station opened on 9 October 1986 with the new Aizu Kinugawa Line of the third-sector Yagan Railway, in the mountainous Nikkō area of Tochigi Prefecture. The platform was built inside the Katsurō-san tunnel, with the station building and an attached tourist and produce facility set on roughly 6,000 m² of levelled land created from the steep terrain in front. The single side platform is connected by stairs and a lift to a concourse below, and the station is staffed during daytime. Although the station bears the Yunishigawa hot-spring name, the resort itself lies about 12 km away; a parallel road was rebuilt in 2011 alongside construction of Yunishigawa Dam, shortening travel time.

Notes

The single platform is inside Katsurō-san Tunnel, making this one of the small group of year-round Japanese passenger stations whose platforms lie within a mountain tunnel.
