History

Hōdatsu Station opened on 24 April 1898 as a general station on the new Nanao Railway, which connected the Tsubata area with the port of Yatashin via Nanao. The line was nationalised in 1907 and incorporated into the Nanao Line under the 1909 naming rules. The current station building dates from a 1957 rebuild. Freight handling ended in 1961 and parcel service in 1984. With the 1987 breakup of Japanese National Railways the station passed to JR West. An eastern entrance was added in 1996, the station was destaffed in April 2020, and ICOCA acceptance began in March 2021. Two opposed side platforms remain in service.
