History
Isohara Station opened on 1897-02-25 as a Nippon Railway stop, was nationalised on 1906-11-01, and was placed on the Joban Line by the 1909 line-naming reform. Freight handling ceased in July 1974 and parcel handling in February 1984. The station passed to JR East at privatisation on 1987-04-01. A new elevated station building was completed in October 1997 and entered service on 1997-11-01. ICOCA-compatible Suica fare service began on 2009-03-14 as the Tokyo suburban fare area expanded northward. The station serves as the main rail gateway for the city of Kitaibaraki and for nearby attractions such as Isohara Onsen and the Noguchi Ujo Memorial Hall.

The departure melody adopted on 2002-05-24 is "Nanatsu no Ko", a children's song whose lyrics were written by the local poet Ujo Noguchi, who was born in the Isohara district of Kitaibaraki.
