History

Chikuni Station is on the Ōito Line in the village of Otari, Kitaazumi District, Nagano Prefecture, 68.7 km from the line's start at Matsumoto and operated by JR East. The site first opened on 23 December 1961 as the Chikunizaki temporary halt under Japanese National Railways, and was renamed Chikuni and upgraded to full station status on 25 December 1962 — initially as an unstaffed diesel-only stop. Operation passed to JR East with the 1987 privatisation. A passing loop was added in July 1989, making the station a two-platform layout, but the second platform was removed in 2005 and the site reverted to a single side platform. The current concrete waiting room dates from a November 2016 renovation.
