History

Minami-Nakagō Station opened on 1 February 1910 as a freight station serving nearby coal mines, and began passenger operations on 18 March 1910. The Jōban Coal Mine Nakagō-mine private line connected to the station from 15 September 1945 and ran 3.9 kilometres to the colliery, carrying coal until the mine closed in August 1971; the spur was formally abolished in 1975. Freight service ceased in 1983 and parcel handling in 1984. With the 1 April 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways the station passed to JR East. A new station building was completed in March 2014, the Midori no Madoguchi closed in 2018, and the station became fully unstaffed on 18 March 2023. It serves Kitaibaraki, Ibaraki Prefecture and lies 167.0 kilometres from Nippori on the Jōban Line.
