History

Kanetsuri Station's site was first used on 1 July 1937, when the Japan Electric Power Company opened a private industrial line. On 16 November 1953, Kansai Electric Power obtained a local-railway licence and the station opened to passengers. The Kurobe Gorge Railway was established on 4 May 1971 and began operations on 1 July of that year, with Kanetsuri becoming a station of the new company.

Notes

Located at an elevation of 443 m, Kanetsuri is a passing place on a gradient. Because trains have lengthened over the decades but cannot extend the platform onto the steeper sections at either end, arriving trains halt on the safety-overrun track beyond the points, then reverse to clear the points before departing — a station-type switchback. To dampen the brake noise the locomotive makes during this reverse move, the rails are fitted with a water-spray device.
