History

Shin-Toyamaguchi Station opened on 12 March 2022 in the city of Toyama on the Ainokaze Toyama Railway Line, the second wholly new station built by the third-sector operator after it took over the line in 2015. The site sits on a former Japan Freight Railway sorting yard, with the decision to construct a new station between Toyama and Higashi-Toyama taken on 17 June 2014. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism approved construction on 10 July 2019 and ground was broken on 13 January 2020. The station name was chosen by public competition from 787 entries between October and November 2020, with the final name fixed on 17 February 2021. Total construction cost approximately 1.54 billion yen.

Notes

The new station's name was chosen by public competition from 787 entries; 'Shin-Toyamaguchi' was actually the third-highest vote-getter, behind 'Shimofugo' and 'Shin-Toyama'.
