History

Shimotsuke-Ōsawa Station opened on 1 November 1929 on what is now JR East's Nikkō Line, in the city of Nikkō, Tochigi Prefecture. Freight handling ended on 15 December 1962 and parcel service on 15 March 1970, with a footbridge between platforms entering service the day before. The station was made unattended on 1 October 1971 and passed to JR East with JNR's 1987 privatisation. The reading of the name was changed from Shimozuke-Ōsawa to Shimotsuke-Ōsawa on 1 December 1990, and staffed operations resumed in 1995. Ticket-window sales ended on 14 March 2008, replaced the following day by simple Suica readers. A new west-side station building opened on 4 December 2010.

Notes

The station's reading was officially changed in 1990 from Shimozuke-Ōsawa to Shimotsuke-Ōsawa, aligning the pronunciation with the historical name of the surrounding former Shimotsuke Province.
