History

Kamishiro Station opened on 25 October 1930 on the JNR Ōito Minami Line, when the section between Yanaba and Kamishiro entered service; the line was renamed the Ōito Line in August 1957 with the completion of the full route through to Itoigawa. Freight handling ended on 22 September 1978 and parcel handling on 25 March 1983, when the station was destaffed and switched to simple commission. JR East took ownership on 1 April 1987. A new two-storey, alpine-style station building, paid for by local residents and businesses, opened on 12 December 1997. The line was suspended after the 22 November 2014 Nagano earthquake, with full service restored in stages by December.
