History

Kaihotsu Station opened on 25 April 1921 as a station of the Toyama Prefectural Railway in what is now the city of Toyama. It became a Toyama Chihō Railway station through the 1 January 1943 merger and now belongs to the Kamitaki Line, 4.4 kilometres from the line origin at Minami-Toyama. Freight handling ceased on 1 August 1969. The station once had two island platforms serving four tracks for passing trains, but was reduced to a single side platform, with the former layout still visible on the ground. A wooden station building survives, and the station has been unattended since 1 April 2017 after a period as a contracted-staff station.
