History

Imai Station opened on 1 October 1997 on the JR East Shin'etsu Main Line, located in Kawanakajima-chō, Nagano. Construction began on 11 December 1996, and the station was the first new station to open in JR East's Nagano branch territory after privatisation. The station consists of two opposed side platforms with an overhead concourse that doubles as a free passage between the east and west sides. Operated as a Midori no Madoguchi outpost contracted to Station Building MIDORI under Nagano Station's management, the booking office is staffed for only about two hours a day. Station number SE 10 was assigned in February 2025, and Suica became usable on 15 March 2025 when Imai joined the Tokyo Metropolitan Area zone.

Notes

The Imai Newtown housing estate east of the station was originally the Nagano Olympic athletes' village in 1998 and was converted to municipal housing and prefectural staff dormitories after the games.
