History

Hokutetsu-Kanazawa Station opened on 18 May 1926 as Kanazawa-eki-mae ("in front of Kanazawa Station") on the Asanogawa Electric Railway when service began between Kanazawa and Nanatsuya. After Hokuriku Railway absorbed the Asanogawa operator on 1 October 1945 the station became part of the Hokuriku Railroad Asanogawa Line. It was renamed Hokutetsu-Kanazawa on 1 August 1949, and on 5 July 1956 the station was relocated to accommodate widening of the JR Kanazawa east-exit plaza. The Asanogawa Line was upgraded from 600 V DC to 1500 V DC on 19 December 1996, and on 28 March 2001 the Hokutetsu-Kanazawa to Nanatsuya section was placed underground, transforming this stop into an underground station beneath the east square of JR Kanazawa.
