History

Gunma-Haramachi Station opened on 5 August 1945 in what is now Higashiagatsuma, Gunma Prefecture, and began handling small-lot freight on 20 November 1945. Freight handling was withdrawn in 1962, parcel handling in 1984, and the station was placed under business consignment in 1971. It passed to JR East at the 1987 privatisation of Japanese National Railways. The original wooden station building was rebuilt in February 2004, and from 2013 every Kusatsu limited express call here, including the once-bypassed Kusatsu 3. A 2017 timetable revision then ended all limited-express stops, and the station was fully unstaffed from 1 April 2017. The town tourism association office moved into the station building on 21 February 2018.
