History
Shin-Kanuma Station opened on 1 April 1929 when Tobu Railway extended its Nikko Line from Sugito (now Tobu-Dobutsu-Koen) to this point, and continued north to Shimo-Imaichi three months later. Freight handling ended in 1983. From 19 March 2003 all Kegon and Kinu limited-express services began calling here, and on 17 March 2012 the station was numbered TN-18 with the introduction of Tobu line-network codes. An east-west free passage opened on 5 April 2012. Typhoon No. 18 in September 2015 washed out the trackbed north of the station, severing the line to Shimo-Imaichi until repairs were completed.

Notes
Beside the east exit stands Yume no Ki, a four-metre aluminium sculpture by Taro Okamoto originally commissioned for the Kanuma cultural centre and relocated to the station forecourt in 2012 for the artist's centenary.
